Albert Einstein said the greatest force in the universe is compound interest.
I’d argue a close second is momentum.
You know momentum. It’s that positive force that charges toward some kind of great outcome.
Momentum is like a locomotive. It starts from a stand-still and then, inch by inch, mile-by-mile, it becomes this incredible force of progress.
I experienced real momentum when I ran an ad agency as a CEO.
We went from 0-17 in new business pitches to winning 14 in a row.
From losing close to $10 million in revenue on my first day, to not missing a profit for the next 5 years.
From listless to Advertising Age’s A-List (two years in a row).
All of these remarkable results came down to one thing: building momentum.
Momentum is two parts.
First part: have a vision.
Second part: take steps to achieving the vision every day. And mind you, these steps are pretty much baby steps until they all add up to a giant leap.
My vision was to be the “center of strategic and creative excellence” for our network.
And every day, I did something to make that vision happen.
Some of those steps included hiring someone new. Sending an email to a prospect. Pushing some work forward. Dropping a cool foto on Instagram. Writing a pov on LinkedIn. Having a coffee with someone on the team. Writing an email to the agency reminding them of our vision and the progress we were making.
Some days I only did one of these kind of things. Other days, I did all of them.
The point is, I did something. Every single day — and that something over a short period of time created the momentum.
Momentum can be created for any endeavor: A business. A desire to lose weight. A project.
You simply have to start.
What’s your vision?
What step will you take to make it happen today?
I love this post. Now I think momentum is the key to everything.
