“I’m stuck.”
That’s often the first phrase I hear to start a Coaching relationship.
Some folks are stuck in their careers.
Some are stuck in their role at their company.
Some folks are simply stuck on a specific challenge.
Whatever is making you feel stuck, a good first move to getting un-stuck is to do an iSWOT.
That’s right a SWOT analysis on yourself.
The SWOT framework is a traditional business and political strategy tool developed at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI).
If you’ve never heard of it, SWOT stands for:
S: Strengths.
W: Weaknesses.
O: Opportunities.
T: Threats.
Often times when people are stuck, they somehow feel they are inadequate. Or they don’t have the imagination or skills to do the next thing.
A little self-analysis can go a long way to helping you discover (or remind yourself) what you’re good at — and what you really want.
So…
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses?
What are the opportunities before you?
What are the threats?
Go ahead.
Take out a piece of paper.
Draw a 2 x 2.
And have at it.
Once you lay out your iSWOT, I promise you’ll start to get some ideas on what you should do.
From stuck to next step.
That’s so simple, and so helpful. I’m about to SWOT myself. Thanks for the good advice.
Thanks Rob, I often talk with folks (and myself) about applying the discipline of a good strategic/creative brief on your own life. The mining we do as marketers is often best applied to our own journeys, isn't it.
