There was something different about the Michigan Wolverines football team last year.
They were undefeated in their first three games. (And would go on to win the Big Ten Championship and make it to the coveted College Football Playoff.)
Indeed there was something about their competence and confidence that the press was picking up on.
A reporter asked the successful and disruptive coach of the team, Jim Harbaugh, what made this team special.
He replied, “Good things happen when you play hard…energy…energy finds the ball.”
Energy finds the ball.
This is a profound observation.
In fact, when I look around and see or work with the most successful people, they all have one thing in common: energy.
Energy creates the vision.
Energy helps come up with the idea.
Energy drives the project.
Energy leads the team.
Energy organizes the meeting.
Energy writes the emails.
Energy deals with the budget.
Energy brings you back from disappointment.
Energy gets you started again.
Energy brings forth the excitement and the celebration.
Energy finds the ball.
All of this said, it’s Labor Day weekend. Time to un-plug, unwind and re-charge your energy.
After all, you’re going to need it next week.
Great piece. True. Energy - the natural enemy of inertia - the mother of momentum.
Agree, it all comes down to energy. Drive, energy, passion, excitement... a lot of different words that mean the same thing. Does it move your heart and soul enough to go beyond. Simple and observable commonality among people who are defined as successful. I would argue they just care more.
